(03-28) 17:31 PDT SAN FRANCISCO — California Pacific Medical Center
in San Francisco is asking nearly 200 patients to undergo testing for
HIV, hepatitis and other blood-borne diseases because of a failure to
follow proper equipment sterilization methods.
Letters were sent
earlier this week to 198 patients who underwent procedures using a rigid
bronchoscope, laryngoscope or esophagoscope at the hospital’s
California campus on California Street from July 2010 to February
The instruments are used to examine the lungs and
digestive tract. In most cases, a flexible instrument can be used, but
rigid scopes are needed for certain procedures.
