PROVIDENCE — The dome of the State House will glow yellow starting
Saturday in recognition of a “silent epidemic” of hepatitis C, only
recently recognized, that is sweeping through America’s baby boomers.
It is estimated that 75 percent of those infected are unaware. Liver cancer and cirrhosis can result.
Dr. Lynn Taylor, assistant professor of medicine at the Warren
Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, is the recipient of a
$300,000 “genius grant” from the Rhode Island Foundation with the
challenge of eradicating hepatitis C from Rhode Island. With the help of
many other medical professionals, she will set up screening tents
Saturday at “WaterFire” downtown to offer free tests — a finger prick
with “a really teeny, tiny needle.” Saturday also happens to be World
Hepatitis Day. Taylor has established a website at ridefeatshepc.com
